Château de Chambord // Loire Valley, France
When you think of fairytale castles, Chateau de Chambord in the heart of the Loire Valley is a picture-perfect embodiment of that dream. The largest and most majestic of the castles on the Loire, this should definitely be on your itinerary if you’re in the area.
Chambord’s History
Crown jewel of the Loire Valley, Chateau de Chambord was constructed during the early 16th century under the patronage of France’s King Francis I. It was originally intended as a hunting lodge and a display of royal power in the heart of the French countryside.
The design of Chambord is often attributed to the Italian architect Domenico da Cortona, although it’s widely believed that Leonardo da Vinci, a close friend of King Francis I, also had a significant influence on its design.
Chateau de Chambord is renowned for its distinct architectural features. The most famous is the double helix open staircase located in the central keep, likely designed by Leonardo da Vinci. This ingenious design allows two people to ascend and descend the staircase simultaneously without ever meeting on the way up or down.
When to Visit
The ideal time to visit Chambord is during the spring and early autumn. The weather is mild, and the chateau’s gardens are in full bloom. Early morning or late afternoon visits are recommended to avoid the crowds. Additionally, consider weekdays for a quieter experience.
